D.W. Henderson, Builder/Designer, 1963 - San Antonio Heights. Three distinct architectural styles are present upon examining this contribution to the built environment: Mid Century Modern, the California Ranch, and New Formalism. By combining all three of these distinct styles, Henderson shifts the narrative of established housing styles to one that embodies changing tastes, needs, and the emerging technology of 1960s United States. Yet, while building trends historically focus on future wants and needs, Henderson’s incorporation of extended eaves along the periphery of the house provide coverage from rain and sun and correlates nicely with the historic California ranchero. Additionally, by using tenets of New Formalist designs, Henderson pays homage to classical architecture but without superfluous ornamentation. This is especially true in all of his designs located off of the concentric circle streets in San Antonio Heights high above the valley floor or the modernist community of Claraboya in Claremont. The vertical, stone clad and stucco facade tie in nicely with the New Formalism designs of Edward Durrell Stone, whose work in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys include Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium and Kresge Chapel on the campus of Claremont School of Theology. The formal spaces of the Living Room and Dining room are defined by fenestrated walls. High ceilings in the tall, narrow foyer convey a sense of importance not only of architecture but of the owner as well. Original character defining features of the house remain throughout much of the interior such as bathroom tile and fixtures, kitchen hardware, and overhead lighting in many of the rooms. The master suite has a private, enclosed patio, stained bamboo walls, and an inviting soft tub. A spacious enclosed room attached to the two car garage provides extra space for storage. Common and private areas of the house open to outdoor spaces. The large, view lot, is spacious enough for a pool or the building of an Accessory Dwelling Unit. 2 bedrooms, 2 baths.
